You’ve probably seen several media stories talking about the Federal Cabinet agreeing to implement a Federal Firearms Registry as part of a “seen to be doing something” initiative following the Wieambilla murders last year.

You’ve also hopefully seen us (and other shooting representatives, including SIFA and various dealers) reject these calls outright.

We all know firearms registration doesn’t prevent crimes (in fact, it does the opposite by creating crimes for administrative errors or paperwork issues) – and more importantly, that the networks are already in place for information and data sharing between Firearms Registries in the different states/territories.

Once again, law-abiding shooters are copping it because the Police screwed up and are apparently incapable of saying “This was our fault, the existing laws are fine and had nothing to do with it.”

We continue to make representations to State and Commonwealth MPs on the matter.
